Personal and executive coaching, like fitness
training, is not something you can be forced to do. In
any kind of performance coaching, you have to
want to submit yourself to a kind of discipline, even
though you yourself will define the workings of that
discipline. There's no point in paying for
life coaching, for example, if you defer the short
weekly phone coaching
sessions to whenever it's convenient, or
don't want to follow up on the assignments you've given
yourself, or otherwise sabotage your own efforts. We'll
help you help yourself. Are you ready?
"There's a difference between interest and
commitment. When you're interested in doing something,
you do it only when circumstances permit. When you're
committed to something, you accept no excuses, only
results." Art Turock
A ROUGH INDEX OF PERFORMANCE COACHABILITY:
(Score yourself on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being
strongly disagree, 5 being strongly agree)
1. Not just browsing anymore, no longer an
idle spectator of my life, there's something I really
want for myself. 2. The time is right for me; I
feel ready to accept a life
coach
or a career coach. 3. I see
coaching as providing a worthwhile
return on my
coaching investment. 4. I can be relied upon to be on
time for all calls and appointments. 5. I can
be relied upon to do the follow-up, between calls, that
we decide on, making an effort to accomplish the tasks
and goals we set for me. 6. I am ready to make
the commitment to myself to do the work required to get
results. 7. I will keep my word in
general. 8. I am willing to try on new ideas or
different ways of doing things, and accept that my
commitment to myself may oblige me to leave my comfort
zone now and then. 9. I will talk straight with
my coach. 10. If I feel that I am not getting what I
need or expect from the coach, I will say so and ask for
what I need. 11. I can share successes and
confidences with my coach periodically through email,
voice mail, instant-messaging, text-messaging, and so
on.
12. I am writing for myself -- and not for
someone I think needs coaching.
