Because
career coaching is new to most people, we're
often asked what the difference is between what a career
coach does and what career counseling is all
about. Career coach, career counselor, or
headhunter? Let's break down the differences.
With a
myriad of career coaches today, who do you contact if
you are ready to seek guidance? Can a career
counselor or a career coach help you get the results you
want? Well, before investing time and money into an
avenue that doesn’t speak to your current needs, let’s
do a comparison.

Are you
looking for a new job and need help with fine-tuning
your resume or cover letter? Are you struggling
with navigating the job-search and require help with
preparing for the dreaded interviews? Or, do you
need assistance with identifying a list of jobs in which
your skills are best suited? If yes, this may be
the time to call a career counselor. (If
you want all this and more, keep reading to find
out how a career coach
can take you further).
You may have heard of a headhunter, but how can
they help? If you are ready to find another job
similar to what you are doing now, in a new company,
call a headhunter. A headhunter will look at your resume and
may note, for example, that you have 10 years of
experience as a biologist. Headhunters will then
tap into companies that are looking for biologists.
Bottom-line, this is a placement service.
Neither
headhunters nor career counselors will typically look at
the broad view of your life, including how well the
careers you have in mind may align with your values and
the other priorities in your life. A headhunter in
particular usually has little concern with whether a job
is a good fit for you, or whether you would enjoy it.
The headhunter's incentives are lined up with getting a
fee for the placement, period. In addition,
neither a counselor nor a headhunter will even get into
the alignment of your career with other aspects of your
life, from relationships and health to creativity,
work-life balance, and spirituality. And isn't
that lack of alignment and lack of balance exactly
what's got you looking for answers?
Now, what
if you are ready for a change? I’m not talking
about a change in a job merely to get away from an awful
boss or a dead-end position, but the type of change that
calls for a deeper look inside. What is your
dream? What have you always envisioned for your
life and what about those signs that keep pointing to:
“something is missing”?
If this
is you, please look behind door number one—because there
is a career coach waiting to get you closer to
discovering what you really want. A career coach
will help you explore your values for the long term; not
just a quick fix by finding another job. With a career
coach, you will work toward discovering your true
passion and start to take steps in the “right” direction
towards enjoying a career and not just a job. And
a career coach, like any good life coach, will work with
you on your entire life, not just your career.
Career coaching is, in other words, far more holistic
and comprehensive and treats the whole person -- not
just their jobs.
If you
are ready for success that comes from living the life
you desire, contact a career coach. This time,
you are the ideal candidate.
