I’m Jim Shumate, a life
coach based in the red hills of Utah, and I’d like to
offer you a path to personal, professional, and
spiritual growth and fulfillment. With 31 years'
experience in the law and legal profession, where I
focus on helping people to effect change, plus a broad
layman’s religious background, I can assist you in
finding the kind of balance in your personal and
professional life that you may be lacking.

Life Coaching
More time to enjoy your
work and family, all in your own lifetime!
Organize your work
and family life so that you have regular, weekly time
with your spouse and children. Learn to set
priorities that you can live by to find success both in
the world and within the walls of your own home.

Choose the right path
for yourself in your personal and professional life.
Is it time to make a change
or a choice in your life that you have been yearning to
make? You can change and make choices that will
lead to happiness and the serenity that comes from
knowing that you are in the right place, the right
relationship, the right job, and the right life.
Learn how to identify
and deal with addictive behavior, within yourself or
others.
In addition to my work with
Feroce I regularly work with the clients of a drug court
and many others whose lives are in personal turmoil.
My success stories are numerous -- from the fellow who
runs the deli where I often grab lunch to the mechanic
who works on my family vehicles. They are both
recovering addicts who rediscovered life with my help
and coaching. But most addictions don't involve
chemicals, and are not ever going to be diagnosed:
these are our addictions to ways of thinking, feeling,
acting, and perceiving the world. Sometimes we
call them bad habits, without realizing, perhaps, that
they're more serious, and biologically ingrained, than
the word "habit" suggests.
Values-Based Coaching (Special Focus Upon Request Only)
Understand that you can
live your life as God would have you live and succeed.
Does it seem to you that
the pressures of life force you to compromise your
deeply held Christian beliefs? Learn how to live in the
world but not be of the world. I can show you how strong
conviction to personal standards will pay big dividends
in how you are respected by your peers.
Find your own voice and
be comfortable with who you are and what you believe.
You do not have to bite
your tongue when someone advocates something that you
find morally repugnant. You can express yourself
and your standards without confrontation, but also
without compromise on vital beliefs.
Law Coaching
Hone your skills as a
successful advocate for courtroom or business settings
Learn how to focus on the
key elements of your work so that you don’t waste time
in frivolous effort. I can show you that even the
most complicated looking set of facts can be reduced to
a question that you could literally write on a post-it
note.
Get organized for court,
meetings and presentations.
I can show you how to
prepare for hearings and trials so that your case is
clearly and efficiently presented. Are you worried
that your work is boring to the jury or simply annoying
to the judge? I’ll show you how to hold their
attention and succeed in presenting your case. Is
your audience a committee at work? The same
principles apply. Are you making a pitch to a new
potential client? Learn your personal strengths
and use them to your advantage.
Why am I a coach?
After high school I was
appointed to the U. S. Air Force Academy, Class of 1973.
After the tough fourth class year, I was diagnosed as a
Type I, insulin dependent, Diabetic which I have
successfully treated for 36 years. I completed my
undergraduate Bachelor of Arts Degree from the
University of Utah in two more years after the Academy.
I graduated from the University Of Utah College Of Law
in 1975.
Since law school, I have been a prosecutor, defense
lawyer, civil litigator and am presently a Master of the
Bench in an American Inn of Court. I have tried
hundreds of cases to jury verdict in the State of Utah.
I also served as a Bar Examiner in the State of Utah for
ten years. I have been married now for 34 years
and have three grown and successful sons. Much of
my own achievement I credit to following a spiritual set
of goals. Those are discussed in my
Christian Life
Coach section.
My work in the law for the last 31 years has given me
nearly limitless chances to help people find new ways of
approaching problems and, more recently, an opportunity
to let people see that they have the power to change
their lives. These changes are sometimes small,
incremental steps, but they lead to truly miraculous
changes. For
the last 5 1/2 years I have had the chance to work with
the Washington County Utah Drug Court and have served as
the fulcrum of the effort to lead addicts to sobriety
and clean lives. I cannot express to you the joy
of sharing a client's growth and realization of
potential that they may have only guessed at.
Success
Larry is the man who
works on my cars. When I first met Larry he was
charged with several felonies, he was behind on his
child support, he was in jail and his life was a
shambles. I worked with, coached, and served as
personal cheerleader for Larry as he found sobriety and
literally found God. Today he is a successful
businessman, and outstanding mechanic, and, most
important, Larry is a good husband and father.
Tim began our
acquaintance much like Larry. He had an active
and destructive addiction. He was losing his job
in the retail world and he was losing his kids.
Today he has a responsible position with his employer
and his children look up to him as the father that they
love and respect. I was blessed to be able to show
Tim how he could get to his new life. Today I see Tim
quite often -- to say hi, and to buy lunch.
