The Life and Mind Coach: What Does a Good Coach Do?

We speed up and keep on track the processes of change

A coach of life and mind listens.  Really listens.  For breakthrough coaching, he listens with empathy and mindfulness and without judgment.  Both to what you are saying and what you are not saying.  Have you ever been listened to so well that you started to think what you were saying might really matter?  That it was important? That's coaching from a peer.  When you're listened to closely enough, you can actually start to hear your self.  Both your life and the clarity of your mind come into better focus.

Coaching works because a good coach fulfills several human fundamentals:

1.  The longing for an ally or partner on one's path, particularly during challenging times.

2.  The longing to be and feel understood.

3.  The curious but true need for permission to change, particularly when you know doing so will mean a loss of understanding, or even growing away from, old friends.

4.  The power of commitment, wherein a person wanting something strives harder for it because of a promise to another.

A life coach asks questions.  A coach will help you clarify your values, beliefs, goals, and personal meaning, and pinpoint goals based on them.  At the same time, any life or personal coach will help you find more balance in your life.

A coach is an advocate for you and only you.  A coach will support you in every area of your life and take stands for what you want toFree Coaching Consultation manifest in your life.

And that's why a coach is also a collaborator.  We work alongside you, equals acting in concert toward the same goals -- yours.

A coach gives support as you set and then achieve the goals of your life.  Asking for support is now more often viewed for what it is, a sign of intelligence and savvy.  If you don't already have the skill of sensing your needs and knowing how to ask for their fulfillment, then that's one of the first benefits of life coaching you'll see.

A coach tells the truth, even about topics that your friends steer clear of.  Sometimes a coach challenges you -- to come to fruition.  Has no one ever influenced your life by suggesting or even demanding that you make decisions in your own interest?  Surely someone has.  On the other hand, how rare it has probably been, to be challenged or nudged along when you really needed it.  Coaching is structured nudging.  We do it so that you won't mind it so much.

A coach is motivational.  Wasn't that what you already thought when you went looking for a coach?  You knew this part.  It works, too.

A coach is objective, and brings fresh perspectives.  A coach will help you create possibilities.  If the talk turns toward a career change, then your coach will become a career coach.

A life and mind coach guides the client toward, or along, his or her real path. A coach collaborates on that journey, and even evolves with the client.

A coach asks questions -- the right questions at the right time and in the right way.

A coach understands -- you and your situation -- and strategizes with you on the next steps. How can you get from here to there?  As the German soldiers in the old sit-coms and comic movies always said, Ve haf vays.

What Does a Good Life and Mind Coach Not Do?

Here are just a few things we don't do:

● Try to change or disagree with your beliefs, values, or goals.

● Attempt to provide all the answers ? we prompt you with questions and we jointly design solutions.
● Use the coaching relationship to act out our own predilections and hang-ups, exhibit our own cleverness, or imagine we're a parent.
● Fail to tolerate your shortcomings.
● Lecture you or tell you what you ought to do.
● Emphasize trying to understand why -- this is what therapists will do for you. It is valuable, and sometimes we'll experience such understanding, but it is not the primary goal.
