Women have challenges
in their lives and careers that are unique to
women. The most effective
life
coach for a woman is therefore someone who
understands those challenges. Many times (there is no
getting around it), personal coaching for a woman will
be best done by a female coach. And we do have
some great women coaches. But do not make the
mistake of thinking that just because someone shares
some of your characteristics, whether gender or color or
other supposed similarities, that person is the most
astute observer and most competent advisor for you and
for every challenge you have.
There are, in
fact, many highly intuitive men who readily grasp
the challenges of and even empathize with their
sisters. In the end, this kind of understanding is the
largest part of what a woman needs in a good coach,
whether in career coaching
for a woman, women's
business
coaching, or lifestyle coaching.
Some women may
simply feel more comfortable with other women, though it
is sometimes (surprisingly, to men) the case that some
women actually feel more comfortable dealing with men. The particular issues confronting a potential client or
"coachee", too, may cause her to turn toward one gender
rather than another.
Women who seek partnership
in a struggle against breast cancer, for example, may
reasonably believe that the issue is too central to the
coaching enterprise to permit the choice of a male
coach, no matter how effective a coach he may
be.
Feroce Lets You Choose the Right
Coach for You, Male or Female
Among our career
coaches and our
life coaches,
we have male and female coaches from many different
backgrounds. For every woman who wants a female
coach, we find there are women who
specifically seek out male counsel, and the reasons are
varied:
● Some women reason that many of
their most critical issues are with men -- in the
workplace, in a relationship -- and there's no better
way to understand the mind of one's primary foil than
to hear the perspective of another man. See also
relationship
coaching.
● Some women, sometimes for
similar reasons, may consciously or unconsciously seek
the validation of another male, particularly one, like
a good male coach, who listens and empathizes and
respects the their opinions and hopes as perhaps few
others do
● Some clients come to us for
strategies on how to best handle significant others
(usually male) who are unsupportive or even threatened
by the clients' aspirations or even their changes --
what sometimes begins as career coaching may shade
into relationship coaching. We've asked women clients,
"How supportive has your husband been of your goals?"
and we often hear, after a revealing pause, a sigh,
and then a half-apology: "Obviously, it varies."
Obviously? Well. From a Feroce coach, at least, you'll
get no "variation" in our support. And we'll talk
about how to talk to him.
● Looking at all aspects of a woman's life is absolutely right, because coaching is
holistic, and there is really no type of coaching
other than LIFE coaching.

-- and
you can hear for yourself, because you're the
boss.
