Your Answer to Passing Down a Legacy From
Generation to Generation
by Susan Epstein, LCSW
What is good parenting? Experts in parent coaching would probably agree that good parenting means providing positive and nurturing experiences for your child that build a strong character and a sense of self-worth.
Have you ever heard the expression “we parent the way we were parented”? To some extent this is true. However, as a parent, a family coach, and a parent coach I have come to believe we are more likely to use the way we were parented as a measuring stick, barometer, or baseline than as a rigid template. Some of us want to recreate our childhood for our children, others want to run away from those memories as fast as we can.
And still others want some of what was good and want to let go of what was not. I wanted my children to have lots of down time, time to play and pretend like I had. I also wanted them to have the knowledge that they could do anything or be anything they wanted; something that I did not learn in my childhood.
How do you get there? Well, I first have to ask, What do you value? Honesty, respect, manners, self-discipline, courage? What do your values give you? Peace of mind? Pride? What do you want to pass on to the next generation, and the next and the next? What legacy are you going to leave your children? What will they tell their children about their childhood experiences?
Whether you are a parent of a young child or a teen, it is not too late to get parent coaching. There is no cookie cutter recipe for good parenting. It has to mean something to you. And it needs to come from you. Your parent coach will work with you to develop your own personal style of parenting, methods that works for you, designed with your values, ethnicity and culture in mind. When you work with your parent coach you will create your unique parent mission statement and learn to implement the parenting style that works for you and your family.
You can’t change the past, but working with a parent coach can have a huge impact on the present and the future of your children for generations to come.
