Are you living from the neck up? Some clients who
want personal coaching for a woman list as one of
their goals the need to get back in touch with their
bodies. The following day-to-day activities are ways to
practice truly inhabiting and enjoying your body,
whatever your condition, age, or appearance.
● Practice gratitude.
Take a pause as you set out on your personal morning
commute to consider the ordinary sensory miracles of
walking and perception.
● Work it.
Move; stretch; climb stairs; dance to Motown while
driving the car if that’s all you can fit into your busy
day. Just be sure to seek out and enjoy some moderate
activity, girl.
● As you see others
exercising, especially if they are heavy, old, or
out of shape, practice silently whispering
encouragement. Instead of contempt for the sub-perfect
body, think “Good for you. Bravo for getting out here
and feeling strong.” You’ll start to be more personally
forgiving of yourself, too.
● Make friends with
the mirror. Study the woman you see there with
tender eyes and find some feature you can cherish.
● Clean your closet.
Commit yourself to discarding three pieces of clothing
each week. Let go of the saggy jeans with the
stretched-out rear, the dress that rides up around the
waist, the sweater that fits but has the small spot in
the front. Nobody else wants them either. Wearing them
says, “I can’t quite get it together.”
● Visit a farmer’s
market or upscale produce store.
In modern life we experience much of our food several
steps from its origins. Smelling and feeling the
sensuous pleasure of fresh fruits encourages us to
satisfy our healthy appetite.
● Rather than limiting
food choices, identify two or three fresh vegetables
or fruits to increase in your meals. Living
with a diet-induced sense of deprivation does not result
in lasting health benefits.
● Think young.
Get better acquainted with young and vital people, both
men and women. While eating disorders remain
disturbingly common, many girls are growing up with
healthier self-images than in previous generations and
can be a refreshing influence.
