Personal development coaching
is coaching designed to provide direction
and guidance, support and counsel, during a client's
personal development efforts. Those efforts are
never-ending, but whether you are just starting or have
been at it all your life, development of your person is
frequently capable of being accelerated through the
support of another human being. If that human
being is trained in aiding and facilitating your
development, all the better. And if your aid comes
in the form of a coach, you will have found yourself in
that most powerful of means for self-change: the
power of human relationship.
Coaching for personal growth and
change is about more than lifestyle coaching or quality
of life coaching. We're not acting merely as life
balance coaches. Our aim is to be instrumental in
sparking in you real and lasting change from
within. Note that: we aim for change,
which means that after we brainstorm with you or provide
suggestions and guidance to you we walk next to you
until you have successfully taken action; and the change
is real and lasting, which means it's not
something superficial, like the "change" you may have
felt briefly after leaving a particularly inspiring, but
nevertheless soon-forgotten, seminar.

There are many challenges in
personal development or growth, and each of those
challenges illuminates a way in which a coach can assist
you:
1. The challenge of trying to
figure out what needs to be changed, or what you want to
change, in the first place. Perhaps you have only
a vague sense of something not being quite right, or
maybe you have some guesses. We can explore that
with you.
2. The challenge of choosing
priorities among the aspects of your life, career, or
personality that you want to develop.
3. The challenge of
strategizing the steps to take in achieving each goal,
and in what order.
4. The challenge of locating
resources: people who can be further sources of
information; books; other media; and
organizations.
5. The challenge of remaining
on track and on target -- and of not losing heart and
conviction.
A personal development coach's main job is to
walk with you through the temporary moments of
excitement (like right after you've bought that new
book, had that inspiring conversation with a friend or
mentor, or hired a coach) and the (also temporary)
moments of despair and discouragement, as well as the
many times when, without any prodding, you'd simply get
side-tracked by the rest of your life and lose
focus. Until the next New Year's resolution, or
birthday, or class reunion, or personal crisis forces
you again to contemplate all that you want to do, but
have not so far had the will, means, or know-how to do
alone.
Whether you are at the
very beginning of the path of what is sometimes vaguely
called self-improvement, or you have been a seeker on it
all your life, there are times when an ally and
confidant is particularly important. It's sharing
those times with clients that coaches live for.
