It seems like I have been coaching all my life.
Friends and colleagues have always sought me out when they
needed to make a decision about their lives or careers, and
I think it's because I bring a sincere concern about people
and genuinely inventive solutions.
My mother was a guidance counselor, so I can remember
talking about people and their direction since I was a boy.
Based in the nation's capital, Washington, D.C., I am
a career and life coach as well as a coach to
entrepreneurs.
Hey Tedd !
That was amazing. . .
Thanks so much for the call & the conversation.
People do seem to love their first free consultations with
me, and I love it when people are serious about building on
the first consultation to make real change in their lives.

Introduction
Tedd Determan is a seasoned management and communications
professional who has spent his life developing and promoting
public-spirited entrepreneurial ventures with a focus on
development. Tedd's firm, Development Communications, grew
out of his desire to apply his creativity, strategic
international alliances and business acumen towards
promoting socially relevant causes at home and abroad.
What started out in 1988 as a humble solo venture grew into
a full-service communications firm with major international
alliances in China, Russia and several African countries.
Tedd has designed and managed an impressive array of
ASTRID & PRSA award-winning campaigns and was recognized by
multiple Secretaries, Presidents, Senators, and even NASA’s
former director of Public Affairs, Brian Duff, who chose to
join his firm. Indeed, Tedd's extensive overseas
consulting experience, his detailed knowledge of complex
marketing systems and his firm’s history of producing
award-winning multimedia campaigns are powerful indicators
of his ability to adeptly manage any global communications
challenge.
Tedd has successfully competed for national and
international contracts; he has conceptualized events and
put into practice innovative cross-cultural and
cause-related outreach programs that often involved
communicating complex topics to diverse audiences in
appealing formats. He developed strategies to reach all
audiences ranging from corporations and institution to
under-served and multicultural audiences. Tedd excels at and
enjoys a variety of activities from concept presentations
and papers to production and distribution of targeted PSAs,
media placements, multi-media news releases, training
videos, exhibits, teaching posters, lesson plans and
brochures.
Public Outreach for Government Agencies
Despite his success in the corporate environment, it is
Tedd’s passion for socially progressive programs that
inspires the best from him. Tedd has launched many
successful projects for a range of non-profits and
government agencies on topics including the environment,
health and safety. His campaigns foster independent thinking
and action, as well as socially responsible behavior and
attitudes. Most notable among these is the NIDA “Mind
Over Matter” campaign.
In addition to winning a coveted PRSA Silver Anvil Award,
“Mind Over Matter” was held up by Bill Clinton and US
Secretary of Health, Donna Shalala, at a national press
conference, citing its excellence in health education.
Tedd was recently engaged by Maurice Strong's Earth Council
Alliance to re-brand the famous environmental organization
and create a global public awareness campaign for
Sustainable Development. He will work closely with the
United Nations and World Economic Forum to forge
collaborative solutions with businesses, governments, and
NGO's to the pressing problems of the 21st Century.
Tedd served in a similar public spirited capacity through
the production and multimedia marketing of a strategy board
game, Yari, designed to promote understanding of Middle
Eastern cultures; and an AIDS awareness comic book targeted
to educate adolescents on AIDS prevention and awareness in
Africa. And, as a pro bono advisor to the start-up NGO
“Global Watch Group”, Tedd, working in partnership with a
small team of volunteers and the American Hospital
Association, has helped to bring significant amounts of free
medical equipment to children’s hospitals in Afghanistan.
Institutional and Legislative Outreach
For nineteen years, Tedd has aggressively supported a range of corporate and
institutional clients with sophisticated crisis
communications and marketing. Events last November will give
you a sense of his stamina and effectiveness. Days before a
fraudulent RICO suit was brought to trial, Russian Aluminum
hired Tedd to rebuff allegations made by a desperate
but PR savvy former owner. His team’s clear website and
targeted lucid briefings took apart the published articles
and neutralized months of the adversaries efforts. The case
was dismissed. The following day, Tedd was recruited into
emergency meetings of a Fortune 50’s strategy team to help
overturn misguided legislation on Capitol Hill.
Tedd’s creativity and a few sleepless nights transformed
their traditional briefing booklet and speaking points into
a compelling visual presentation peppered with punchy
factoids and clear illustrations. This promotional piece,
coupled with effective lobbying, created the desired buzz on
Capitol Hill and ensured rapid education on the issue. The
legislation was overturned. The same week, the director of
planning for the largest design engineering firm in the
United States pulled Tedd into a contract to
facilitate a twenty-year visioning session for Aberdeen
Proving Grounds, a US military base. He finished the final
session successfully just hours before he left to his well
orchestrated wedding in Switzerland. This dedication to
objectives and ability to deliver under pressure has earned
him a long list of grateful clients … and a happy spouse
too.
International Communications and Public Service
Tedd’s extensive experience managing events, communications
projects, multimedia initiatives, staff and deliverables for
a diverse clientele in the United States is strengthened by
his experiences building alliances and promoting companies
abroad. Since starting Development Communications, Tedd has
forged many very high-profile partnerships.
In 1995, he met
with China’s Minister of Science and Technology and appeared
on national television to discuss relations between the two
countries and his burgeoning initiatives in Distance
Education. In 1997, Tedd built the corporate communications
strategy of African Telecommunications Network and organized
events in Washington with the Black Caucus as well as
numerous mini-conferences involving presentations to
presidents and telecommunications leaders through out West
Africa.
In 1998, he was one of the rare Americans invited to
address the Russian Duma, the equivalent of the U.S.
Congress, to introduce the concept of social advertising to
the Russian people. The head of the
Russian Federal Communications Commission appointed Tedd to
run the six million dollar “Vash Dom” initiative, ultimately
squashed by a currency devaluation. And later that year, Tedd facilitated a
major American distance learning company’s entry into China
through what was described by the President of Sylvan
Learning as the largest press conference he had ever
attended. He will work closely
with the United Nations and World Economic Forum to forge
collaborative solutions with businesses, governments, and
NGO's to the pressing problems of the 21st Century.
International
Business Development
Tedd met with members of
China’s Politburo and appeared on mainland China’s national
television network to discuss relations between the two
countries and his burgeoning business in distance education
called “Limitless Learning”. Tedd ultimately
partnered with Rupert Murdoch's representative in country to
launch China Business Media. In Togo, Benin, The Ivory
Coast, Guinea-Conakry and Senegal Tedd spearheaded
the launch of African Telecommunications Network (ATN). His
contribution was recognized with a 30% equity stake.
More recently, Tedd was
approached to launch a full-immersion international
university in Kentucky and to support conflict negotiations
in East Africa. Tedd is also leveraging these new
relationships to create TrackThree, an investment fund
focused on Africa that will support the cessation of
conflict, transparency in business, value added on-continent
and economic development.
Finale
Tedd’s social entrepreneurial drive dates back to his
remarkable childhood successes in business and a feeling
that he needed to give back to the community. Tedd traces
his passion for communicating internationally to an
awareness he developed during his years of leadership as the
president of Duke University’s International Association.
With more than seventeen years of experience in creative
strategizing, event planning, marketing production, public
relations, alliance building, staff management and
multimedia management, Tedd has a passion about affecting a
change in the world through communications---He’s mastered
it for many clients; he’ll do it again for you as your
coach.
