C.J. Liu is a career coach who has worked with individuals, groups, teams, and organizations.  As a former CFO and marketing and strategic consultant, she has over 20 years of business experience in a variety of industries and functional areas.  This extensive business background enables C.J. to quickly understand the breadth and depth of many career-related issues.  Before joining Feroce Coaching, C.J. served as an in-house executive/business coach at Microsoft.

I have a master’s degree in Human Resources, which provides me with a great background from which to give you with resume advice, negotiating skills, and interviewing advice.  I took steps to reinvent myself a few years ago because I was stuck in my career.  I left a high-paying job as a traveling occupational therapist, and I sought out a coach, read books, took career tests, and discovered who I was as my identity related to career.

I used my skills and life learning in my own reinvention process.  I am now in a career that fits me and pays even better than the one I worried about giving up.  Career coaching has been a true passion of mine and a way to continuously challenge others and reinvent myself in the process.  Why consider me as your career coach?

A Soulful Yet Strategic Approach To Finding The Right Career

I’m Laura Svolos, a Certified Professional Coach who specializes in helping people to find a more fulfilling career and to navigate the transition skillfully, methodically, and strategically. I also help individuals with their resumes, cover letters, and talking points for interviews. I believe that finding the right job is a process that begins by knowing oneself. So my coaching begins with a self assessment process in which I use a variety of assessment tools to help you gain clarity about your:

• values (what’s most important to you at this stage of your life);

• skills and strengths (those that you enjoy using); and

• key criteria for an optimal work environment (yes, such a thing does exist!)

This self assessment process ensures you are laying the right foundation for finding a fulfilling job. It also pays off down the road during the interviewing stage because people who are comfortable with who they are and who know themselves well tend to do better in interview situations.

My coaching draws upon my communication skills (I hold a master’s degree in journalism from a top ranked journalism school); my spiritual training (I studied Eastern spiritual wisdom and was ordained a Swami of Kriya Yoga); and my strengths as a strategic, analytical, and intuitive thinker. I also draw upon 22 years of professional experience spanning industries such as politics, entertainment, journalism, and not-for-profit. I have managed communications, fundraising, and marketing departments; have successfully launched a consulting business in which I grew and eventually sold; and have broken into two notoriously nepotistic industries without any contacts.

On a personal note, I derive a lot of satisfaction from helping clients find a job that they are passionate about because this has been my path. At the age of 29, I left an unfulfilling job in the film business and took some time off to re-evaluate my life and my goals. I wanted to do something more meaningful with my skills. But I didn’t want to just jump into something that sounded interesting and find out later that it wasn’t the right fit. So I consulted with a career counselor (as there weren’t coaches back then).

As a result, I started a new career in nonprofit. After three months in an entry-level position, I was promoted to the director of the department. I spent another 10 years in nonprofit and for six of those years, I owned a successful nonprofit consulting firm. I believe I was successful because this career was a bull’s eye match for me in terms of my values, strengths, and skills. So I am passionate about what I do as a career coach because I know from personal experience that it works.

What do I want to do when I grow up?

I hear this frequently from clients.  For some people, they know at 16 what they want to do; others search a whole life time to find career satisfaction and clarity.  Why is it hard for some?  Much goes back to our family background, expectations from others, the values and systems that influence us.

We have found from research that it is important to have a career “vision” and to look to certain factors to help us make a choice.  These factors are: Abilities, Skills, Interests, Personality, Values, Family of Origin, Vision and Goals, Career Cycle (or, Where am I in my life?)

What are Abilities, Anyway?

Abilities are our permanent set of talents and natural strengths. They stabilize in a person’s life at about age 14 and are virtually the same throughout the person’s working years. Abilities implicate the ways we learn, communicate, make decisions, and use our creative and mental talents.

The Illuminating Power of Assessments

Our research has shown us that utilizing assessments to understand you at a deeper level will be very helpful to our work. All assessments are taken online and will be discussed on the telephone. Our “golden” assessment, which has given much clarity to many people, is The Highlands Ability Battery. The Highlands, as it’s called, is a 3½-hour test, taken online, that reveals those innate abilities of a person that are formed by the age of 16.  It also reveals an optimal work situation, compatible work roles, artistic abilities, and learning styles.

Other assessments utilized are the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Strong Interest Inventory (SII).  The Myers Briggs reveals information about a person’s personality, temperament and compatible careers.  The Strong Interest Inventory is a short test revealing information about a person’s interests.  Participants receive a computerized report with different career suggestions and fields to explore.

I have adapted the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) model. Together we create a survey of your situation, I do fact finding, then I identify and clarify problems and with them, discover opportunities. Next is idea finding which is similar to brain storming. Solution finding is the convergence of all that comes before it, distilling everything you have explored down into realistic and do-able solutions. Action finding is the final step which become your action steps.

Integrative Approach:
I use an integrated approach to help you find your passion and purpose in life. In addition to coach training and real life experience as a consultant, entrepreneur and an executive, I am  trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Gestalt psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). If this sounds like alphabet soup to you, just know that these are merely tools that I may use. I tailor my approach to each client, sounding out your strengths to find a path that is true for you. It’s not only what you bring to the table that’s important but finding a career that suits your suite of unique strengths is the key to satisfaction and fulfillment. I do not have a cookie-cutter approach to coaching.
